    Working with Customers remotely

Many of us support customers remotely to save time and avoid any unnecessary costs, some customers can afford a remote connection with high technology to make the helpdesk support engineer life easier, however others are not!

To workaround this we used to use http://www.TeamViewer.com before, but after realizing the cost of the product that is around 800$ we have switched to http://www.AMMYY.com, it is a simple remote desktop sharing application that works perfectly without the need to perform any complicated installations and cost is affordable (around 30$!).

We do support our own accounting department who are in the same building but different floor remotely!

    Dynamics GP Excel Paste Updates

Since the first day I announced the release of the excel paste, I been getting questions and requests from customers who already purchased the tool to do few modifications.

Issues started with unique screens, since the product is totally dynamic and does not have screens statically defined, sometimes few screens might not be effective as required and we been working the last few weeks on catching these screens by following customers requests.

Honestly I didn’t expect this number of requests nor the number of interested customers, which added a big number of helpdesk incidents to cover customers demands and product gaps.

One of the big things we used to get was to include the ability of having “headers” and “details” as a part of the product functionality so end users can paste multiple invoices at once or one invoice with multiple lines and each line with multiple serials, and here the challenge was started!

We been able to dynamically deliver the first part, we have adjusted the product to accept multiple windows by having one to many relation between the header and details lines. Below video might clarify more:

Example on header and details lines in GP Excel Paste

This version will be published soon once it get released from the Quality Assurance team and fine tuning some features, and will keep trying hard to find a solution for items and serials.

Dynamics GP 2010 Web Services Installation - The Security ID structure is invalid. (Exception from HRESULT:0x80070539)

I been trying to install the web services for one of my clients, they are running a complicated environment, clustered SQL Server environment over three servers and clustered Hyper-V server to manage virtualized web applications like Workflow and Business Portal.

We have installed the SharePoint Server Farm and configured the Load Balancer to manage the load balancing between servers and created web applications for both Workflow and Business Portal and then moved to the web services installation which was already installed on the production environment, unfortunately the installation never succeeded with the above error message.

I tried everything, reinstalled it more that 100 times with no luck, searched every where with no result where I realized that the web services cannot be installed on a multiple server environment which does not make sense.

Finally I have decided to select the same Web Services database of the production environment and it worked! Looks like the Web Services cannot be installed with more that security database which is logically right due to the complication of the security roles and tasks on the web services entities.

Next time do not waste your time and directly select one name for web services database!

Payment Document Management – Post Dated Checks

Few months ago, I have activated Payment Document Management module for one of my clients here in Jordan to manage their post dated checks, as they have around 200 post dated checks received daily!

The customer enjoyed working on the module and had their checks managed properly with a little limitation as below:

When you do a remittance, the system posts the bank transfer and journal entry per remittance and based on the remittance date, which make it a very hard task and might be undoable to do bank reconciliation by the end of the month.

In the normal business scenarios the customer deposits the payment document in the bank and will notice the effect the next day. However, the bank will include the payment in the statement ordered by the check due date and check by check, this makes it a very hard task to reconcile bank statement with GP specially when you have a big number of payment documents on daily basis.

After working on the module for a couple of months, they been unable to proceed and back to their old utility due to this limitation.

I wanted to share this limitation with the community to be aware that this cannot be done out of the box and would like to encourage you to vote on this to be implemented in the upcoming releases using CONNECT.

Please click on this link to vote.

    Microsoft Dynamics ERP Licensing Changes

I liked the way how Mark Polino posted about it in this post, checkout mark post below:

David Musgrave takes a look at Microsoft Dynamics ERP Licensing Changes.  I’m going to say that on a personal level, there are elements of the new licensing that I find to be a naked cash grab by MS. Customers screamed about the DCO licenses and rather than deal with customer anger, MS renamed them to make them sound more appealing. Accessing GP data with other tools should be covered by other licenses, the SQL CAL, the Office CAL, etc. There is no good reason to allow access other data in the same location with these licenses but not cover Dynamics data. Companies have already paid for access to this data, there is no reason for them to have to pay again.

    Auto-Complete for Dexterity Coding?!?!

Last year, David posted an article that shocked all Dexterity developers, he created a screenshot that shows dexterity codes inside Visual Studio .Net! Developers using dexterity was very much excited to work on that, but unfortunately it was April fool’s day and David couldn’t live without posting such an article!

    image

However, Mariano was working the last few weeks to enhance dexterity with one of the most wanted .Net features which was the auto-complete, in this article he explained the whole story of the IntelliSense and the requirements to integrate non-OOP applications, and in this article he suggested this methodology to Microsoft Connect and wanted your votes and support to get this done.

For those who work on Dexterity and like the way it works, you must vote to make your life easier!!

Update: don’t like to have out dated information! I didn’t see this article by David, and this article by Mariano.

    Thanks Mariano for the update!
